Thought for the Day

A lot of things can get under a person’s skin during the average work day. Take the commute to work through smog and traffic; that makes me cranky. Then, there is not enough time to do the work assigned. And, an annoying coworker will not go away. Yet, there is one consistent aspect to every work situation that will help me get through this day: our reality is 90 percent what’s going on inside our heads and 10 percent what’s happening around us.

The most important part of every interaction that you have is what is happening inside your own head.

Take a conflict with a boss. It doesn’t matter what the topic is or even who is right, wrong, fair, or mean. What matters is how you walk away from the event. Did you say something you will regret? Do you feel bad, undermined, devalued? Or does it roll off your back – all in a day’s work?

A week is filled with hundreds of interactions and we are the sum of our reactions to them. The exact same situation that makes me want to pick up a baseball bat makes my husband laugh at the absurdity and shrug it off. He leaves the situation refreshed and light hearted while I may stew for hours.

Seem implausible? Recently in a meeting of managers, a boss handed two of individuals new projects. My client felt empowered and trusted because he is already operating at full capacity. His coworker felt angry, burdened, and over worked. Same situation, two different interpretations.

You are clearly responsible for your reaction to what is going on around you. It doesn’t matter if a coworker called you cheese whiz. What matters is if you laughed it off or came out swinging. Taking responsibility for your actions lays the foundation for your own self worth.

It is a beautiful day when you figure out that no one else can determine your value. All those hundreds of interactions which formerly added up to “I had a good day” or “What a crappy day” are now just data points for observation. Good day is in your head and it is up to you.

No matter what is going on around you, you are building a strong commitment to yourself and your values. You are confident that you are a good person and good at what you do regardless of the circumstances around you. You reinforce this by taking responsibility for your reactions to events and conversations.

You are back in your own head.

Reality is 90 percent inside our head and 10 percent the world around us.
